BT (Bleeding Time) Test

What is Bleeding Time?

• Purpose: The BT test evaluates the duration it takes for bleeding to stop after a small, standardized cut is made on the skin.
• Function: It primarily assesses platelet function and the initial phases of blood clot formation, which involves blood vessel constriction and platelet plug formation.

Why is the Bleeding Time Test Done?

1. Diagnosis: Helps diagnose bleeding disorders and platelet function disorders, such as von Willebrand disease, thrombocytopathy, and other platelet-related issues.
2. Pre-Surgical Screening: Evaluates bleeding risk before surgical procedures to prevent excessive bleeding.
3. Monitoring: Monitors the effects of medications that affect platelet function, such as aspirin or anticoagulants.

When Should You Get a Bleeding Time Test?

• Unexplained Bleeding: If you experience symptoms of excessive or unexplained bleeding, such as frequent nosebleeds, prolonged bleeding from cuts, heavy menstrual periods, or easy bruising.
• Family History: If you have a family history of bleeding disorders.
• Pre-Surgery: As part of preoperative assessments to evaluate bleeding risk.
